Researchers from the University of Portsmouth are carrying out acoustic
tagging of European Seabass to track fish movement around the Solent as
part of the wider Solent Seascape Project.
How does it work?
- Fish are tagged internally with acoustic tags
- This allows fish movements to be tracked
- Tagged fish emit unique acoustic pings
- Receivers on the seabed listen for these pings
- When a tagged fish is in range, receivers record the detection.

Tagged fish will be identifiable by their external T-bar tags. If you catch a fish with a T-bar tag, please record the following:
Tag number, date caught, location caught and, if possible, size
Please then release the fish, and send any info collected to:
joanne.preston@port.ac.uk
